The EDMC
The ELSA Germany Moot Court Competition (EDMC) is the biggest german moot court in civil law. It has been taking place since 1994 and as such looks back at a long tradition. The EDMC is being organized annually and consists of three rounds – Local Rounds, National Final Round and Federal Final Round.
The Local Rounds are hosted annually during the winter semester (October – March) by the local groups at their respective universities. The National Final round is usually taking place during May of the following year. During this round, all winners of the Local Rounds compete against each other. The best two teams from the National Final Round advance to the Federal Final Round in front of the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe. The pleadings in the Federal Final Round are headed by actual federal judges and specialised lawyers.
Benefits
Accessibility
Unlike many other well-known moot courts, the EDMC is being held in German. Additionally, it focuses exclusively on German civil and civil procedure law, making it suitable even for second- and third-semester students.
Required time
Another advantage of the EDMC is that you don’t have to take a whole semester off to take part. The different rounds are spread over a year and take only a few weeks of preparation each.
Plead in front of the Federal Court of Justice
The finalists are provided with the unique opportunity to plead a case in front of real Justices and Lawyers of the Federal Court of Justice.
Video Contest
Participants can document their preparations and compete against other participants in a video contest, of whom the winner will receive an IPhone.
